Children and digital media

 

Digital media is fast growing and very affecting thing in our everyday life.

I would help children with their first steps of using digital media by telling about media in our everyday life and how we should use it in a correct way. 

There are many ways of using media but for children I would teach safe use of media and I would try to show that we can use digital media as a tool in school projects for example.

I would try to avoid children getting addicted to digital media.

 

MLL website has a clear and informative text about using media in our everyday life.

For parents it should be important to know what children are doing with media platforms and how much they are using it.

It would be good to talk about suitable limits for gaming and other media use together with children. (Mll.fi 2023) 

In our group discussion during our lesson we had a very good talk about children using phones. Nowadays in Finland we have a problem growing and it is linked to phones and gaming.

Sport hobbies are decreasing in a very alarming speed.  

 

 

What is Media education and media literacy?


For me media education and media literacy means using it mindfully and thinking before doing.

In my opinion people should learn more about how analyze media and not believing all the thing we have there.

We have so many scams nowadays that it can be hard to see the true things.

Media education about recognize scams is a good way to prevent falling for scams and it should be started at early age.


In daycare many activities can be used next to daily basis. From social media I found some different teaching game activities which are very good in my opinion. Children can learn colors and numbers by playing games. Visual and sound effects help children to learn also. However, it’s important not to only use digital tools when learning and exploring new things because if so, children can get addicted to screen time.  

For preschoolers also some type of math games are very good and teaching. Using different types of games and platforms to learn new things is a great way to learn next to typical learning styles. I remember that we used these when we were learning math in elementary school. In Finland we have a platform called “Ville” and it can be used in any subject in school. We also had English learning games online that we were playing with computer or phone.

As we go towards World that uses digital tools and media more and more everyday, I think it is good to learn how to use it already in early age. It’s also very likely that the form of studying is changing to online as years go by.

Advantages and disadvantages of digital media in preschool: 

Advantages  

  • - Learning the use of digital tools and platforms 

  • - Many options how to learn  

  • - Digital media can be seen as a great educational tool 

  • - Can promote creativity 


Disadvantages  

  • - Technology can have a negative impact on a child’s development  

  • - Can affects to sleep  

  • - Can lead to addiction
